Default Sudden interest in email?...hmmm

I searched the site but didn't find anything titled similarly.

Has anyone noticed how there are posts wanting to only communicate by email?

This is raising a flag for me because our GuildWars accounts are tied to our email address.

Is my concern just paranoid, stupid, and wrong? Or would it be wise to not give out to others your email that you use for your GuildWars account? And all of this might be really way off point if the retail isn't registered the same way.

If someone better informed about this could address it that'd be really helpful.

Please if the concern is accurate then could there be a "Basics to protecting your GuildWars account" posted somewhere?

Hmm, I never thought about that. I would like to hope that stealing accounts is not the intention of those who are stating different threads that ask for email. But an easy way to keep safe, if you want to respond to those threads, is to use an email account other than the one you use for Guild Wars.

Just reminds me yet again of how much I wish GuildWars would let us create normal account names, and not tie them to email adresses.

I know DAoC uses a "secret word" to control ownership of an account. So even if someone figures out your password and changes it you can call in and give them the secret word and change the password to get your account back. Is there anything like this with guild wars accounts?

Uhh... I dunno... I would just use PMs. Although, they need your email and password to that email to be able to get into your GW account.

This is a very good point and I wish I had used my alternate email that I never give out... Account stealing was a major problem in some of the past MMORPGs that I have played and I hope that the creators of GuildWars come out with a more secure way other than passwords to protect your account.

So make sure you go into any other GuildWars forums you may subscribe to and turn off the showing of your email (you being a universal you)

I myself don't think you're being paranoid, it's completely rational... number/letter generators could be used to just find out someones password. i hope guild wars has a way to counter account theft, cause that would really annoy me. i haven't seen any kind of account recovery as of yet, but it's also not released, and normaly... people who are major assholes don't show up in games till after the release... as of now tho, i think the guild wars comunity is pretty good.

Silverthorn, maybe you should post what you just mentioned in the "Suggestions thread?" A "secret" word or whatever sounds good, hopefully they have something like that, maybe they have something better? But post it in the suggestions thread and maybe there'll be some feed back from it.

Unbeknowst to me, I actually avoided the problem of having my e-mail connected to my Guild Wars account visible to anybody who wants to see it on this site, by the simple oversight of using my old e-mail address instead of the one which I actually check. Hurrah for me!

A secret word wouldn't be a bad thing to add if it increased the overall security of your account information, and I have the perfect word to use too

Edit: And Phoenix, if you want a Gmail account, I could always send you an invite and get you started. There's also a thread located somewhere on the forums that has a bunch of people who were offering a while ago, so take your pick.

I replied to one of those "email me" threads http://guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1988 , but I didn't use the email address that my GW account is on.

Post Use another address

Same as ^^

When I respond I make sure I use an email address that is not linked to my GW account in any way. Plenty of places that offer free email so it shouldn't be hard to get another address to use in lieu of your email connected to your GW account.

Yeah but it would be nice if us lazy people that really don't want to have to keep 2 email accounts active had something to help keep our accounts secure. I'm not complaining but I do think if we're paying for a game we shouldn't have to put forth the effort to keep our accounts secure. Thats the responsibility of the company taking our money.
